What to expect
Day 1: Hike to camp
Our group comes from the agency of our Tour Operator in the city of la Antigua, Guatemala, at 8:00 a. m., here you can fill your water bottles and buy any additional equipment you might need. Hikers should eat breakfast before you and bring a small snack for the road. An hour's ride takes us from La Antigua to the quiet mountain town La Soledad, perched on the crest of the slope of the Pacific from the Acatenango Volcano. The trail to the Volcano Acatenango has four microclimates different, each one of which will take you about an hour to go through.
We will begin walking through a steep trail through fields of local farmers, the same path used by local villagers every morning to reach their fields of corn, peas and lilies. Our first hour of walking will help you to acclimatize and warm up the muscles of the legs to the hike of the day.
The second phase of our ascent, it passes by a former tropical cloud forest. In this area environmental, we find some of the oldest trees in Acatenango, an incredible biodiversity of flora and fauna, fresh mountain air and the sounds of the birds and local wildlife. This type of cloud forest, high mountain is located on the upper slopes of many volcanoes and mountains highest of Guatemala and is the home of the famous resplendent quetzal.
After leaving the cloud forest, we will be rewarded with fantastic views of the other volcanoes of the highlands (Atitlan, Toliman, San Pedro, Santa Maria, Santo Tomas, Tajamulco), along with views of the mountain chain of the Cuchumatanes. Prepare a picnic of fresh at noon for our group to enjoy.
The temperate forest of coniferous and tropical dry forest characterise the third phase of our ascent that will take us to the tree line of the volcano hit by the storm. Our camp is located just below the line of trees with panoramic views of the valley of Antigua and the Volcano Fire. After setting up the camp, the hikers are free to rest, relax and enjoy your surroundings while our guide prepares a dinner of fresh in the camp to ~3750m with tea and coffee hot.
Day 2: Climbing the Acatenango
In the morning, at 04:00 am our group sets out on a climb of 45 minutes to the summit by a trail of sand and gravel dotted with pine trees dwarf and mosses alpine high. The trail to the summit is very steep which we have seen and leads to the rocky summit exposed to the gusting wind and cold that pass constantly on the peak of Acatenango.
At the summit, our team will rest and enjoy unparalleled views of 360 degrees of the whole of the highlands of Guatemala to the border with Mexico. After 45 minutes at the summit (depending on the conditions and time considerations), the group will begin the descent of 3 hours and return to The Solitude after breakfast.
Our group has the opportunity to descend through an alternative route for the Acatenango Volcano, experiencing a variety of micro-climates and a beautiful trail.
From The Loneliness, we will drive back to Antigua, where we arrive in the afternoon with plenty of time for you to enjoy the delights of the old colonial capital of Spanish around the 1:00 p. m.
